Buyers Guide

Welcome to the Home of Shipping Containers

Deciding to buy a shipping container is the first step toward a great solution for storage, business, or even recreation. But with so many options available, it can be tough to know where to start. That’s where we come in.

This guide is designed to walk you through everything you need to know. From choosing the perfect size to preparing your site for delivery, we’ll make your journey simple and clear. At Home of Shipping Containers, we want you to feel confident and excited about your purchase.

Step 1: What Do You Need a Container For?

First, let’s figure out the “why.” Your purpose will determine the type, size, and condition of the container you need. Common uses include:

  • Secure Storage: Storing furniture during a move, keeping business inventory safe, or protecting farm equipment.
  • Workspace or Business: Creating a site office, a pop-up shop, or a workshop.
  • Recreation: Building a backyard swimming pool or a personal gym.
  • Specialized Needs: Safely storing hazardous materials.

Thinking about this first will help you narrow down your choices significantly.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Container for the Job

We offer a variety of containers to fit every need. Here’s a look at our main categories:

Standard Shipping Containers

These are the most common choice for general storage and transport. They are built to be tough, secure, and weather-resistant.

  • 10ft Container: Ideal for smaller projects or properties with limited space.
  • 20ft Container: Our most popular size. It’s perfect for residential storage, small business inventory, or as a base for a simple modification.
  • 40ft Container: Offers a huge amount of space, making it great for large-scale commercial storage or ambitious building projects. High Cube (HC) versions provide an extra foot of height.

Container Pools

A fast and stylish way to add a pool to your property. Our container pools are engineered for durability and come pre-fitted with the necessary plumbing and filtration systems, making installation much faster than a traditional pool.

Hazmat Containers

Safety is non-negotiable when storing dangerous goods. Our Hazmat containers are specifically designed with features like bunded flooring to contain spills, specialized ventilation, and secure locking systems to comply with safety regulations.

Container Accessories

The right accessories can transform your container’s functionality.

  • Lock Boxes: Add a layer of security to protect your padlock from being tampered with.
  • Shelving & Racks: Maximize your internal storage space and keep things organized.
  • Vents: Improve air circulation to reduce heat and condensation.
  • Ramps: Make it easy to load and unload heavy items with a dolly or wheelbarrow.

Step 3: Understanding Container Conditions

When you buy a used container, you’ll see different grades. It’s important to know what they mean.

  • New (or “One-Trip”): These are in the best possible condition. They’ve only made a single journey from the factory and will have minimal to no scratches or dents. They are ideal for projects where appearance matters.
  • Cargo-Worthy (CW): These used containers are certified to be structurally sound and suitable for shipping cargo. They are guaranteed to be wind and watertight, though they will show signs of use like dents and surface rust.
  • Wind & Watertight (WWT): A great option for storage. These containers are no longer certified for shipping but are guaranteed to keep wind and water out, protecting what’s inside.
  • “As-Is”: The most affordable option, but these containers come with no guarantees. They may have significant rust, damage, or even holes. We recommend inspecting these in person before buying.

Step 4: Preparing for a Safe Delivery

A smooth delivery day starts with good preparation. This is a critical step for safety and success.

  • Choose a Level Spot: Your container needs to sit on flat, solid ground. If the surface isn’t level, the doors may not open and close correctly. Concrete slabs, gravel pads, or even wooden blocks at the corners can work well as a foundation.
  • Check Your Access Route: The delivery truck is long and heavy. Ensure the path to your drop-off location is clear of obstacles.
    • Width: You’ll need at least 10 feet of clear width for the truck to pass through gates or driveways.
    • Height: Look for overhead obstructions like tree branches or power lines. The truck needs about 15 feet of vertical clearance.
  • Plan for Unloading: A tilt-tray truck needs a long, straight area to slide the container off its back. A side-loader truck will need space alongside where you want the container placed. Discuss your site with our team so we can send the right truck for the job.

Safety First: On delivery day, keep a clear zone around the truck. The driver is a professional, so let them manage the unloading process. Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
